Abstract: We review some key ideas of Picard in his work on the local time existence of solutions of nonlinear ODEs. We then discuss on how to apply these ideas in nonlinear PDEs. Examples on local and global well-posedness of solutions of the system of Navier-Stokes equations and SQG equations will be given.
We also introduce the graduate program in Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Tennessee. The talk is accessible for all mathematics levels and undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to attend.
