The Department of Mathematics is responsible for curriculum development, teaching, and arranging for visiting lecturers for all mathematics-related modules of all the schools of the IU. The department provides courses for basic mathematics, as well as appropriate mathematical applications within various subject areas.

Members of the Department of Mathematics are active in research. Major areas include optimization, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, stability of dynamical and controlled systems, applied probability, and financial mathematics. They are authors or co-authors of many research papers published in distinguished international journals such as SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Inventiones Mathematicae, Advances in Mathematics, Mathematical Programming, SIAM Journal of Control and Optimization, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, SIAM Journal on Optimization, ESAIM Control, Journal of Global Optimization, Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Journal of Differential Equations, Physical Review A, Physical Review E. The department has been awarded the title “Excellent Research Unit” of the Vietnam National University-HCMC for many years during 2011-2022.
Research projects are carried out and seminar groups are working regularly at the department. The department is also responsible for the Master’s and Ph.D. programs on optimization and control theory at the University of Natural Sciences, VNU-HCMC.
In addition, the Department of Mathematics is responsible for the program of Applied Mathematics (Financial Engineering and Risk Management) and Applied Statistics at IU.
